Social media audit template: 6 checks, 15 minutes, 3 fixes

Most audit templates are 40-page corporate reports. This one is built for freelancers: fast enough to do for every prospect, specific enough to get a reply.

The short answer

A quick social media audit checks 6 things: profile basics, posting consistency, content mix, engagement and replies, proof and reviews, and the top-performing post. Turn what you find into exactly 3 specific fixes. For a prospect, that’s a 15-minute audit that works as your opening message. For a new client, it’s your before-snapshot.

What a social media audit is, for freelancers

For a brand, an audit is a big quarterly review. For a freelance social media manager, it’s two things:

  1. A sales tool. A short, free audit of a prospect’s page is the best opening message there is. It proves you looked, and it gives value before asking for anything.
  2. A starting snapshot. When a client signs, the audit is your “before” picture, so you can show progress in month 3.

Both use the same 6 checks below.

The 6 checks in a social media audit

01Profile basics

Bio says who they help and where, a working booking/menu link, correct hours, a clear profile photo, highlights that answer common questions.

02Posting consistency

When was the last post? How many in the last 30 days? Gaps of 2+ weeks are the easiest fix to point out.

03Content mix

Are there reels, not just photos? Is there a mix of tips, behind-the-scenes, reviews and offers, or is it all promos?

04Engagement and replies

Are comments and questions answered? Unanswered “how much?” comments are lost customers.

05Proof and reviews

Do their best Google reviews and before/after results appear anywhere on their grid?

06Top performer

Which recent post got far more views or likes than usual? That’s your “do more of this” recommendation.

Turn your findings into 3 fixes

An audit that lists 20 problems feels like criticism. 3 specific fixes feel like help. Good fixes are:

  • Specific: “Add your booking link to your bio,” not “optimize your profile.”
  • Easy to check: the owner can see the problem in 5 seconds.
  • Tied to money: bookings, calls, orders, visits. Not “engagement.”

How to use an audit to win a client

  1. Pick a business with good reviews and a quiet page (see how to get social media clients).
  2. Do the 6 checks and write 3 fixes. 15 minutes, no more.
  3. Send one fix in your first message and offer the other 2. See DM templates for social media managers.
  4. When they say yes, send all 3 and offer a 15-minute call to walk through them.
  5. On the call, the audit becomes your plan, and the plan becomes your proposal.

Auditing a new client’s account

Once they sign, go deeper with the numbers you now have access to: reach and profile visits for the last 90 days, which posts brought link clicks or messages, and when their audience is online. Write down the starting numbers. They become the first line of every monthly report.

Audit mistakes to avoid

  1. Too long. Nobody reads a 12-page audit from a stranger.
  2. Too harsh. Lead with something they do well. Owners are proud of their business.
  3. Too vague. “Improve engagement” isn’t a fix.
  4. Giving away the whole plan. Fixes, yes. The full 90-day strategy is what they pay for.
  5. Fake or guessed numbers. Only report what you can see.

FAQ

What should a social media audit include?

At minimum: profile basics, posting consistency, content mix, engagement and replies, proof and reviews, and the top-performing recent post, ending with a short list of specific fixes.

How long does a social media audit take?

A prospect audit can take about 15 minutes if you stick to 6 checks and 3 fixes. A full audit of a new client’s account with their analytics usually takes 1 to 2 hours.

Should I charge for a social media audit?

For prospects, a short free audit is a great way to start a conversation. A detailed audit with a full strategy can be a paid product, often a few hundred dollars, or credited toward the first month.

How often should you audit a social media account?

Do a full audit when you take on a client, then a lighter review every month in your report and a deeper one every quarter.

Can I audit an account without access to its analytics?

Yes. Everything in the 6 checks is visible from the public profile. Analytics add depth once the client gives you access.
